Imperial Library (Japan)

The Imperial Library of the Empire of Japan was established in 1872 under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education. Tōkyō Toshokan; became Teikoku Toshokan in 1897; popular name: Ueno Toshokan.[1]

Until Japan’s defeat in the Second World War, the executive government controlled all political documents, depriving the people and the Diet of access to vital information.
